local-natives-sunlit-youth

Local Natives had kind of fallen off my radar since their 2013 album Hummingbird. “Past Lives” is their first new song since then and it’s nice to have them back in the mix. Guitarist/vocalist Taylor Rice the following to say about the song in a press release – “The world is not static, it’s made new over and over again. But we tend to live the same patterns in a loop, loving the same way, wrestling the same demons, the same dynamics playing out around us again and again. Untangling every moment and decision that led us to where we are now can make fate feel concrete, inescapable. But our world is not fixed, it’s constantly reemerging, and we can change it into whatever we want.”

patience-the-church

Too bad this song wasn’t released in the early 80s, it’s sound is perfect for the Stranger Things Season 2 soundtrack.

frokedal-hold-on-dreamer

Frøkedal is Anne Lise Frøkedal’s solo debut (in the past she’s collaborated with Robyn Hitchcock and Sufjan Stevens and fronted Norway’s Harrys Gym before they split in 2013). “The Sign” is a percussion driven track accompanied by some flawless vocals and heavenly harmonies. According to Frøkedal, “Olaf Olsen, who plays the drums, lives in a cozy old house outside of Oslo. I remember going out to him on a beautiful summer’s day and recorded us playing this song, me on an acoustic guitar while he was all over the drumkit. It was so much fun – and that recording remained the core of the track.”

A bit more poppy and polished than previous releases, but still a solid outing from my favorite noise pop duo. Alexis’ vocals really shine on this record and Derrick’s guitar work slays as always. This track is basically a super catchy, pop song on roids.

chance-the-rapper-coloring-book

Perfect track to kick off one of the year’s best albums.  Hands down one of my favorite overall songs of the year. I love that artists like Chance are getting their due and succeeding on their terms.

lfk-cover-edit-print-1_1500

One of my favorite discoveries this year and I can’t get enough of this title track. Don’t be fooled by the minimalist package, because hiding within are layers of fuzzy synths, heavy lyrics, dreamy vocals, and unleashed sax to wrap it all up at the end.

Fantastic one-off. You could tell people this is from a John Hughes movie and I doubt anyone would think twice. Crossing my fingers for more new tunes.

broncho-double-vanity

Stand out track from the Oklahoma quartet’s impressive third full-length. Perfect mix of new wave pop and garage fuzz rock.

therange_potential-350

A sobering tale of love lost. “I’m slowly fallin’ out of love with you” is repeated throughout and it sounds like it’s the most difficult realization this person has ever had to make.

har-mar-superstar

The entire record is great, but I can’t keep myself from listening to this song over and over and over again. It’s basically fun personified in song.  Fun fact: the song was written by Julian Casablancas

An outrageously upbeat pop number tied together with crisp guitar, sprawling synths, and driving percussions.

the-1975-i-like-it-when-you-sleep-for-you-are-so-beautiful-yet-so-unaware-of-it

I had pretty much written these guys off and completely ignored this album. Then I heard the album’s title track…mind blown. If the rest of the album sounded like this, it would probably be in my top 10 of 2016.
