CMJ Music Marathon 2012

Now until Oct 20th, hundreds of bands and music fans will take over New York City for the annual CMJ Music Marathon.  While CMJ may lack the “big names” you find at Coachella and Lollapalooza, it totally makes up for it with shear volume.  There are soooo many bands and artists playing, it’s actually a bit nerve wrecking, trying to decide which acts to see.  But what really makes CMJ rad, is the music discovery aspect.  This is where you’ll see the next “big name” and it will be in a random Manhattan basement with 10 other lucky people.  Personally, this is the music festival I want to attend most.  One of these days my dream will become a reality, but until then I am happy writing about it.  And hopefully helping this year’s attendees deal with the daunting task of combing through all the music they have at their fingertips.  So if you’re having a tough time deciding who to see this week, consider these artists/bands.  And last but not least, have fun discovering your new favorite band.

[on repeat] Skipping Girl Vinegar//Chase The Sun

Australian indie-darlings, Skipping Girl Vinegar have just released their critically acclaimed Chase the Sun EP in the US.  The EP showcases singles ‘Chase the Sun’, ‘Here She Comes’,  ‘Sift The Noise’ and ‘One Chance’, which all received heavy rotation across Australian radio.  Lead single ‘Chase the Sun’ features the critically acclaimed ‘Monkey in Space’ film clip that has enjoyed extensive play on Australian music television, being award ‘Rage clip of the week’ and extended prime time play.  The band (along with a team of cowboy scientists and artists) sent a discarded hobo toy monkey to the edge of space (110,000 ft AKA 4 x higher than Mt Everest) with the help of a giant weather balloon and camera to capture the flight in what is a must-see experience (enjoy the video below).  The new EP is available now via Secret Fox Records.
