[revisited] 2009

I spend a fair amount of time digging for new music, but I always go back to my favorites. One year in particular is always on repeat and seeing as how we’re now ten years removed, it’s about time I gave praise where praise is due.

To put it bluntly, 2009 was an epic year of music. It’s the year I’ve revisited most frequently since I started compiling my year end lists – (31) Days of Good. I honestly can’t think of another year that includes so many of my favorite records. Records I still listen  to on a regular basis. Records I don’t think i’ll ever stop enjoying. Hell, records I don’t think I could live without. Records like Mew’s No More Stories Are Told Today…, The Antler’s Hospice, Karen O and The Kids’ Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack, Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, Japandroids’ Post-Nothing, Future Islands’ Feathers & Hallways, St. Vincent’s Actor, Passion Pit’s Manners, Telekinesis’ Telekinesis!, Mos Def’s The Ecstatic, Discovery’s LP, and The xx’s xx.

This is such a small sample of incredible releases and I can go on-and-on listing my favorites. But records aren’t meant to be read, they are meant to be heard. So if you’re unfamiliar with one of greatest years of modern music, I’ve got your covered. Take a spin down memory lane with my (31) Days of Good//2009 playlist below and check back throughout the year as I revisit more favorites.

“…’Water Slides’ is the single I’ve been waiting for. The Mew I have been missing from my life. Where ‘Satellites’ touched upon a much lighter and uplifting theme, ‘Water Slides’ decides to delve into a much more brooding and somber world. The world where Mew shines. It is in this matter that they warm up my heart the most. I love me some dark undertones in music. I thrive on it. So basically, what I’m trying to say is that this song has been on repeat all day and I’ve shoved it down all of my friends throats already. You guys are next in my shoving! WOOO!” (via The Original D-Rose)

“Sjowgren is a brand-new trio from the Bay area, though their sound, which Bob calls ‘clean, wonderful pop,’ convinced Robin they must be from Sweden. ‘Seventeen’ is a joyful, experimental confection, with lead vocals that reminded both Bob and Robin of The Concretes’ singer Victoria Bergsman.” (via All Songs Considered)

“I love me some Mas Ysa (aka Thomas Arsenault).  You should slap on some headphones for this ambitious track, which features big vocals and a wonderfully textured arrangement.” (via Side One Track One)
