[on the rise] Trails and Ways

photo magic credits to Alex Khomyakov via facebook

I must admit, this post is long overdue.  Along with the rest of the blogosphere, I’ve been obsessing over Trails and Ways for the last couple of months, so i’m a little confused on why I waited this long to spread the love.  Oh well, better late than never.

Hailing from Oakland, CA, this quartet is producing some of the most infectious dream pop (or in the band’s own words “bossa nova dream pop”) i’ve heard in some time.  They’re premiering a brand new track, “Border Crosser”, tomorrow (Monday, 10/22) over on Indie Shuffle and i’ve heard rumblings of some upcoming shows in SF and LA.  I don’t really know much of anything  in regards to a full-length, but i highly doubt one’s not in the works and i expect news on it’s release sooner than later.  In the meantime, head on over to the band’s SoundCloud page and enjoy the plethora of fantastic tracks, including their take on Miike Snow’s “Animal” and M83’s “Midnight City”.  If you only have time for one track, you must listen to “Mtn Tune”, by far the band’s standout track and easily my favorite.

[on repeat] Astro//Panda

Astro  is an indie/electro-pop band from Chile.  Though I have know idea what they are singing about, I really don’t care.  I absolutely love what I hear.  Astro’s self-titled debut was released back in August, but I owe this discovery to the All Songs Considered podcast, more specifically Jasmin Garsd with NPRs Alt.Latino.  And like Jasmin, I believe Astro will find crossover success outside of Latin America.  I’m actually a bit surprised I haven’t heard them on the airwaves here in Los Angeles (the ball’s in your court KCRW).  I love love love the track “Panda”, it sounds like M83, only in Spanish.

[watch] NightFall

“NightFall” is a three minute time lapse tour of light through the City of Angels, with music by M83 (“Echoes of Mine” from Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming).  Cinematography, Direction, and Editing by Colin Rich and produced by Pacific Star Productions.  Find out more about “NightFall” and check out more of Colin’s videos on his vimeo page.  Thanks to 35mmBeats for bringing this to my attention.

[watch] M83//Reunion

To coincide with the release of M83’s Reunion EP, the official music video was released a couple of days ago. Reunion is the second single from last year’s epic Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.  The EP features a handful of Reunion remixes from the likes of Mylo, The Naked And Famous, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr..

p.s. If you’re lucky enough to attend the Austin City Limits this year (Oct. 12-14), you’ll definitely want to catch M83’s set.

[on repeat] Porcelain Raft

Porcelain Raft is the brain child of Italian born Mauro Remiddi.  Over the last couple of years, Remiddi teased us with some impressive EPs and singles, and toured with the like of The Antlers and Youth Lagoon.  Now as he gears up for the release of his debut LP Strange Weekend (out tomorrow, 1/24, via Secretly Canadian!), he’s touring Europe, including a couple runs with M83 and Smith Westerns (dates).

I’m not exactly sure how Remiddi has managed to craft such a dreamy and visceral sound, but i’m sure it has something to do with his 27 years of travels across Europe, from his native Italy to London; of caravaning with the Berlin Youth Circus playing traditional gypsy Klezmer music; or maybe reinterpreting traditional music in North Korea; and maybe even his stint playing piano for an Off Broadway tap dance show.  Whatever it is, I don’t really care, it works.
