[on repeat] Gambino x 3

As Childish Gambino preps the release of his latest mixtape, three new tracks have dropped this month.  I’m a big fan of Mr. Glover, the actor and rapper, so i’ve been a very this month.

The first track to surface/leak is the eloquently titled “Fuck Your Blog”.  The comedic track features Yung Humma and Flynt Flossy and is a direct jab at the haters that think Gambino’s hip hop flame is a fluke and undeserving.

Fuck Your Blog (ft. Yung Humma Flynt Flossy)

Next up, “Unnecessary”, which features ScHoolboy Q and premiered on Funkmaster Flex, hence the bleeps and radio tags.

The last track to surface is also my favorite of the bunch.  Gambino released “We Ain’t Them” personally on his twitter account, hot on the heels of a pretty major vent session.  Rather than going on the offensive, like he did with “Fuck Your Blog”, he goes on the defensive with this track and raps about the direction of his hip hop career.  I’m not exactly sure why he feels like he as to defend himself.  He’s been my favorite hip hop artist since I first listened to the I Am Not a Rapper mixtapes and his live show is insanely good (my favorite of 2012 right now).  As far as i’m concerned, we need more hip hop artists like Gambino.  You can download “We Ain’t Them” here and stay tuned for more Gambino.

A few of my favorite new releases this week, including the latest from M. Ward and Amadou & Mariam, some standup from the very funny Donald Glover, and the highly anticipated debut LPs from Alabama Shakes and Kishi Bashi (my personal favorite this week).  As always, be sure to check out Largehearted Boy, Amoeba Music, and KEXP for a whole lot more of this week’s musical offerings.

What are your favorite new releases this week?

[watch] Childish Gambino // Heartbeat

Here is the latest visual from Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover from NBC’s now defunct show  Community. Gambino had one of our favorite records this last year and at least two track from Camp were featured on (31) Days of Good. Gambino is touring right now and I’m hoping to see him in Sac, be on the look out. Enjoy

(31) Days of Good: Day 18

About a week ago, Brendan did a day of hip hop (Day 11) and it got me thinking about my favorite hip hop tracks this past year.  I’m actually a pretty big hip hop fan, just really picky when it comes to what hip hop artists and tracks I like.  But honestly, if there’s solid production and beats, and I can skate/snowboard and/or dance to it, chances are I will like it.  So without further ado, i’m pleased to present some of my favorite hip hop tracks of 2011.

I’ve never really considered myself a fan of The Roots.  I don’t really have a reason not to be, other than I’ve never given them a proper listen.  Now not much has changed, I still haven’t give them the listen they deserve, but I heard this track not too long ago and it was an instant favorite.

2011 saw the release of Hoodie Allen’s third mixtape, Leap Year.  Now I must say, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as 2010’s Pep Rally, but it was still a good outing and worth checking out if you’re a fan of alt-hip hop.

Philly hip hop duo Chiddy Bang released their third mixtape this year (and preview of their debut LP, Breakfast, due Feb. 2012).  Similar to how I felt about Hoodie Allen’s Leap Year, I enjoyed Peanut Butter and Swelly, just not as much as previous releases.  With that said, the entire mixtape is worth checking out as there are a handful of really good tracks.

About a week, Lupe Fiasco dropped a brand new track — “American Terrorist III”.  The track samples the Kavinsky & Lovefoxxx song “Nightcall”, which was featured on the soundtrack “Drive” and has turned into the remix/mashup sample of choice (I found Biggie and Childish Gambino remixes sampling it a mere 30 minutes ago).  This track is rumored to be off of Fiasco’s forthcoming record, Food & Liquor Part 2.  I hope that’s the case.  Food & Liquor (part 1) is one of my favorite hip hop albums and this track is much more reminiscent of Fiasco’s earlier work (particularly  “Kick, Push II” and “Daydreamin”…probably my favorite Fiasco tracks).  I’m looking forward to what Lupe has in store for us.

If you’ve followed this here blog in the slightest, you know that i’m a huge fan of actor/comedian/writer Donald Glover’s hip hop, alter ego Childish Gambino.  After numerous mixtapes and EPs, Gambino released his debut LP this year.  Camp ended up being #10 on my favorite albums of 2011, but I was also a big fan of the EP he dropped earlier this year, so i’m including one track from each.  I don’t think you’ll mind much.

[watch] Troy & Abed Christmas Rap

And to think, this show is in danger of cancellation, but garbage like Whitney and it’s creepy laugh track is miraculously still on the air.  To be honest, I really shouldn’t be that surprised that one of the funniest, most clever, and well-written series on TV right now is fighting for survival…isn’t that right Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks, and Party Down?

Anyways, enough with the negativity.  This has probably been posted everywhere by now, but I just watched the last episode of Community last night, so here you go.  By the way, if you haven’t watched this episode, DO IT!  Best episode of the season, maybe the series, and if it’s not at least nominated for an Emmy, I’ll cry foul-play (and maybe even cry a little bit).  This scene in particular was my favorite.  Troy (Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino) and Abed (Danny Pudi aka seriously funny guy) bust out the best Christmas rap since Run DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis”.
