the-blow-think-about-me

Fantastic one-off. You could tell people this is from a John Hughes movie and I doubt anyone would think twice. Crossing my fingers for more new tunes.

broncho-double-vanity

Stand out track from the Oklahoma quartet’s impressive third full-length. Perfect mix of new wave pop and garage fuzz rock.

therange_potential-350

A sobering tale of love lost. “I’m slowly fallin’ out of love with you” is repeated throughout and it sounds like it’s the most difficult realization this person has ever had to make.

har-mar-superstar

The entire record is great, but I can’t keep myself from listening to this song over and over and over again. It’s basically fun personified in song.  Fun fact: the song was written by Julian Casablancas

lucius-good-grief

An outrageously upbeat pop number tied together with crisp guitar, sprawling synths, and driving percussions.

the-1975-i-like-it-when-you-sleep-for-you-are-so-beautiful-yet-so-unaware-of-it

I had pretty much written these guys off and completely ignored this album. Then I heard the album’s title track…mind blown. If the rest of the album sounded like this, it would probably be in my top 10 of 2016.

cc-dust

Fascinating combo of edgy synths and heartfelt lyrics. Super catchy and dance inducing.

phooey-girl-songs

Ukrainian rock band making sweet, psychedelic rock with a sound straight of the the 90s Elephant Six Collective glory days.

theregrettas

Lydia Night is the founder and one fourth of The Regrettes. I should also mention she is only 15, and along with the rest of the all-teen band, is making garage pop a 30-something guy like me wishes he could.

hundred-waters-show-me-love-skrillex-remix

The worlds of indie, hip hop, and EDM team up for one of the best remixes (and live performances) of the year. And after the shit show of an election we just suffered through, we deserve more love and happiness.

Hundred Waters’ Nicole Miglis explains –

This song was literally a journal entry I wrote to myself a few years ago, so seeing it become something bigger in the context of everyone involved was really special.

Skrillex adds –

It’s all about love and positivity, what this world really needs right now. I want to thank all of the artists in the world going out of their way to make people’s lives better and happier through creating and sharing their art.

beck-wow-single

Seriously. How lucky are we to have an artist like Beck making music? Very few artists are as versatile as Beck. One day he’s winning a much deserved Album of the Year Grammy for 2014’s Morning Phase as “sad Beck” and the next he’s dropping this banger on us. Easily this year’s song of Summer

bowie-collage-31days2016

2016 was rough for music fans. We lost far too many artists this year…Prince, Merle Haggard, Phife Dawg, Leonard Cohen, Sharon Jones…damn.

But losing David Bowie hit me the hardest.

I still find it hard to believe. How is Bowie gone? He’s Ziggy Stardust, The Thin White Duke, Major Tom, Aladdin Sane, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Nikola Tesla, The Goblin King.

We’re lucky he gave us some many great years and so much good music, because there will never be another artist like Bowie. Never. Bowie was one-of-a-kind and only Bowie could leave us the way he did. On his terms.
