Apps I can't live without (part 1)

Always look for the good in something bad

When LA’s Indie 103.1 went off the air, like most Los Angelinos, I was super disappointed and shocked. I still remember when Indie went on the air. I had recently returned from a trip to Northern California and was scanning the airwaves. Out of the blue I stumbled upon “Where is My Mind” by The Pixies. After that was “Idioteque” by Radiohead. I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. What was this glorious station playing some of the best music ever made?

Indie 103.1 introduced me to a lot of new music and I really hated to see it go. Yes, indie still broadcasts online, but if you don’t have access to a computer (eg you are driving to and from work) you’re out of luck. Fortunately for all of you iPhone and iPod Touch users, indie has a great app that allows you to stream their online broadcast from the palm of your hand.
The best part of this app is now I can listen to indie anywhere I get cell service – while I snowboard in Mammoth, when I visit the fam in Northern California, when i visit the east coast, etc.
Indie may not be accessible on the fm dial, but now it’s at the palm of my hand!

some great news

As most of you probably know, The Arcade Fire is busy working on their follow up album to 2007s Neon Bible with an expected release sometime in May 2010. What some of you may not know is that the band is working with Markus Dravs (Bjork, Coldplay), we can expect to hear the album’s first single in early 2010, and they are planning some live shows!!!

sooner or later you'd hear me rant

All the media coverage and “blacklisting” of Adam Lambert is really starting to annoy me. Don’t get me a wrong, I’m not a fan. As far as i’m concerned, American Idol is ruining music and Lambert’s music makes my ears bleed.

What really chaps my ass is that Lambert is being “blacklisted” for his sexual escapades on TV (has it been so long that we forgot about the infamous britney/madonna/xtina saliva exchange?), when he should be chastised for his music. If I really wanted to hear a crappy version of Queen, I would head to the nearest karaoke bar on a Friday night and listen to your dime a dozen “dude bro” butcher “Another One Bites the Dust”.
Who cares if he kissed a dude America! We are so caught up with his onstage antics we are missing a much more important point…HIS MUSIC IS NOT GOOD. The fact that a guy who sounds like cats in heat when he sings got a record deal should really be what’s upsetting people.
And really ABC, does it come as a total shock that something like this would happen?

sick of "best of 09" lists?

As 2009 quickly comes to an end, you’re probably seeing a whole lot of “best of” lists. Personally, I love the “best of” lists. I love to see what other tastes are out there. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I completely disagree with the lists, but nevertheless, I enjoy them.

But if you’re sick of all the “best of” lists this year, or if you’re just looking for a good laugh, Pitchfork has a great list of The Worst Album Covers of 2009. My personal favorite is MannieFresh (pictured) and his use of Transformers.
