my most recent discovery came to my attention after watching spike jonze’s robot love story, i’m here (trailer below). spike jonze knows good music and sprinkles it throughout the film (you’ll hear sleigh bells and animal collective…just to name a few). however, the music that stands out the most comes from ASKA. ASKA’s song, there are many of us, is heavily featured throughout the film and there is good reason. just trust me and listen to the song (below) and you’ll see what i’m talking about.
ASKA IS A CLASSICALLY TRAINED PIANIST WITH A DISARMINGLY ETHEREAL VOICE, HER COSMIC PRESENCE SPANNING THE LOS ANGELES ART MUSIC SCENE THROUGH AN ECLECTIC RANGE OF PROJECTS. ASKA HAS LONG HELMED THE LOCOMOTIVE POP OF MOONRATS, AS WELL AS WRITING AND PLAYING IN THE CONCEPTUAL ART BAND, THE SADS. AS A LIVE GALLERY INSTALLATION, THE SADS HAVE PERFORMED THROUGHOUT EUROPE AND THE US, AT ART BASEL IN MIAMI, PALAIS DE TOKYO MUSEUM IN PARIS, AND THE JOURNAL GALLERY IN NEW YORK. ALONGSIDE BECK STARK (LAVENDER DIAMOND, DECEMBRISTS) AND ASKA COMPOSES, ARRANGES AND PERFORMS IN THE 30-MEMBER, ALL GIRL, LA LADIES CHOIR, WHOSE DEBUT ALBUM COMES OUT JANUARY (TEENAGE TEARDROPS). ASKA’S FIRST SOLO FULL LENGTH RECORD WILL BE RELEASED FROM MANIMAL RECORDS THIS JULY WITH A SINGLE, “THERE ARE MANY OF US” (A-SIDE) / ALMOST THERE(B-SIDE). COLLABORATORS INCLUDES NICK ZINNER (YEAH YEAH YEAHS) AND FLEA (THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS).
