[on repeat] Kathryn Calder

I love, love, love The New Pornographers, but it wasn’t until today that I discovered the solo recordings of keyboardist/vocalist, Kathryn Calder. (thank you dinner party download!)

Calder released her first album back in 2010.  A deeply personal record, Are you my Mother? was largely born through two years of Kathryn caring for her terminally ill mother.  As depressing as that sounds, don’t think of the record as a eulogy.  Rather, think of it as a “statement that life is a mixed bag, and that without losing things you would never know to cherish them.”

This last October, Calder released Bright and Vivid.  A solid follow-up, the record is filled with harmonic vocals and some surprisingly elaborate production.  Lead single, “Who Are You?”, is one heck of a good track and Calder’s “uniquely angelic voice” really shine.  If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and familiarize yourself with Kathryn.

Mid-Week Mixtape: Post-Coachella Edition

Coachella 2011 has passed and it was amazing…or at least that’s what i’ve been told.  You see, while all my friends and the music outlets I pay attention to were enjoying the abundant musical offerings, while melting in the desert, they were also constantly updating their facebook, twitters, blogs, etc. and letting everybody else know how much fun they were having.

I really wanted to go this year and there were handful of bands that I was really looking forward to experiencing live — Animal Collective, Phantogram, Duck Sauce, Crystal Castles, The New Pornographers…just to name a few.

Now I can’t complain too much.  The reason I was unable to attend Coachella was because I was in New Orleans for work, but it still stung being constantly reminded of the good times and tunes I was missing out on.  So, I decided to dedicate this weeks mixtape to the bands I wanted to see most at Coachella 2011.
(Disclaimer: I’m only including bands/artists I have never seen live, hence the absence of Arcade Fire and others)

Animal Collective – For Reverend Green
More Animal Collective.

Crystal Castles – Violent Dreams
More Crystal Castles.

Cut Copy – Lights and Music (Moullinex Remix)
More Cut Copy.  More Moullinex.

Duck Sauce – Barbra Streisand
More Duck Sauce.

The New Pornographers – Moves (video)
More New Pornographers.

Phantogram – When I’m Small (RAC Mix)
More Phantogram.  More RAC.

Robyn – Dancing On My Own (Fred Falke Remix)
More Robyn.  More Fred Falke.

[watch] The New Pornographers//Moves

Canadian indie rock outfit, The New Pornographers, released one of the best albums of 2010 (Together).  In 2011, they released one of the best music videos.

This definitely isn’t breaking news.  This has been floating all over the blogosphere for quite a while now and even though most of you have probably already watched this, I couldn’t resist posting it  — the video (and song) is just too good and I would see this movie in a heartbeat if it were ever made (watch the video and you’ll understand what I’m talking about).

Enjoy!
