“Endless Summer is an ideal, a fantasy, the kind you can impose onto another person when you are lonely or when reality is dark and cold, like the boy in the film clip,” says Hayley Mary, the front woman of the  Australian moody-pop quartet The Jezabels.

The video for Endless Summer, premiered this morning by the international culture outlet PopMatters.com, was directed by Mikey Hamer and appears as if straight out of a period-piece film, complete with beautiful cinematography and costumes. The band’s penchant for the dramatic shines through, re-asserting their self-described genre “intense-indie,” called  “emotional intensity and grace” by Canada’s Chart Attack. The video is for the single Endless Summer which will be released on their debut LP Prisoner, for which the U.S. release date is yet to be set.  [source: planetary group]

And if you have a hankering for some live music, The Jezabels will be returning to the U.S. and Canada in November to tour with the Canadian indie rock band Hey Rosetta!

In Case You Missed It…

So, I was lucky enough to take a much-needed vacation the last couple of weeks, but I wasn’t able to do much of anything in regards to this here blog…even though there seemed to be an abundance of musical going-ons while I was away.

With that said, I figured I should do a little roundup of music news/updates/announcements that caught my eye while I was out on the open road.  My guess is most of this is old news for you, but in case you missed it…

Cults is going on tour with Foster The People this Fall.  Check the dates here and enjoy the official video for Go Outside.

Kanye and Jay-Z released their highly anticipated collaboration, Watch The Throne.  Does it live up to the hype?

Australian moody pop quartet The Jezabels return to Los Angeles tonight (7/18) for a one-off show at The Viper Room.

Since their first Los Angeles shows in March, they’ve been touring Europe and Australia and putting the finishing touches on their debut LP. They’ll be back to tour the U.S. this fall, but come out on Monday for a chance to catch them up close and personal, hopefully playing some brand new songs.


The Jezabels are often praised for front woman Hayley Mary’s intense vocal styling and enchanting stage presence. While already a well-recognized name at home, they’ve been building an international buzz since last year’s CMJ Music Festival, carried through Canadian Music Week, SXSW, and Brighton’s Great Escape.

Their last release, Dark Storm, is the third in a trilogy of EPs. “Pitched somewhere between The Cranberries’ edge-of-the-world howl and Arcade Fire’s fiery emotional release, (their three EPs) shot the Sydney quartet to the top of the Australian charts; its forthcoming full-length debut seeks to do the same internationally.” praised The A.V. The Jezabels are a four-piece musical group based in Sydney, Australia.  Hayley Mary (vocals) and Heather Shannon (piano/keyboard) first began playing together in Byron Bay before moving to Sydney to attend university, where they met Nik Kaloper (drums) and Sam Lockwood (rhythm guitar), and formed the band

The band’s sound is not exactly the easiest to define.  They’ve been compared to such bands as Fleetwood Mac and Banshees, and sound like a blend of indie pop, rock, and disco pop.  The band themselves often describe their sound as “intensindie”.  Now I’m not exactly sure what “intensindie” means, but I don’t care, and neither should you.  All you should care about is that The Jezabels make fantastic music.

They’ve received substantial airplay in Sydney, including FBi Radio and Triple J.  The later also selected the band as the Triple J Unearthed featured artist in December 2009 and featured two songs in the Triple J Hottest 100 2010 (Easy To Love came in at #49 and Mace Spray came in at #16).

The band has also found success here in North America.  They’ve toured the States and Canada, including a much buzzed about appearance at the most recent SXSW, and have been featured quite prominently on US college radio and CMJ.

The Jezabels have so far released a trilogy of EP’s: The Man Is Dead (2009), She’s So Hard (2009), and Dark Storm (2010).  As of now, they’re currently recording their debut full-length, which is due out later this year.
