Favorite videos of the year…

french horn rebellion - swing into it

♩ French Horn Rebellion – Swing Into It (ft. HAERTS) [from Swing Into It EP]

“Here’s how the story goes. Last winter, we did a performance at LowBrau in Sacramento – which has become one of our favorite places to play – and after the show, a group of beautiful ballerinas came up to us, wanting to congratulate us on a show well done. After recovering from shell-shock that such pretty girls would talk to us, we learned that they were members of the Sacramento Ballet Company, and we both began to lament the deteriorating interest the public has in classical music, ballet, and the fine arts.

Together we thought – hey, let’s do something about this ! Let’s collaborate and make something special that is truly fun and artistic – nothing ironic, nothing satirical, just an upbeat and beautiful collaboration using our classical skills. FHR had a track featuring HAERTS coming up, so they sent it to the Sac Ballet, and Rex Wheeler, the choreographer, was immediately inspired. Alexandra Cunningham- the Sacramento Ballet’s social direct was recovering from a ballet-related injury at the time, and hit up all the local Sacramento boutique shops for costumes, and got funding for the dancers from nights at LowBrau, while FHR found the production team, ‘The Strangers’ to put together lights, camera and action. What you see is the final product of working through the internet and on the ground, and we’re so proud of it.” (via blog.frenchhornrebellion.com)

the apache relay

♩ The Apache Relay – Katie Queen of Tennessee [from Apache Relay]

“The Apache Relay’s ‘Katie Queen of Tennessee’ is easily one of the catchiest tunes I’ve heard this year. And in the song’s new video, a troupe of 40 young dancers raise the fun to heights I hadn’t imagined with a blissfully, perfectly choreographed routine.” (via Bob Boilen, NPR Music)

jamie xx - sleep sound

♩ Jamie xx – Sleep Sound [from Girl/Sleep Sound]

“I was on a train listening to music, getting deep into it, and this girl started staring at me,’ says London-based artist and poet Sofia Mattioli of the genesis of her video for Jamie xx’s ‘Sleep Sound.’ ‘After a while I took my headphones off and she came up to me, started signing and then wrote me a note to say that she was deaf but could almost feel the music by my movement.’ With the germ of an idea from this chance encounter, Mattioli was asked to create a video for the member of The xx and Grammy-winning producer of Alicia Keys, Gil Scott-Heron and Drake. During the course of one day, she danced with 13 members of the Manchester Deaf Centre with ages ranging from five to 27 years old, who responded to the movement of the artist and the vibrations in the air given off by the song. ‘The relationship between silence and music is a big part of what I am trying to express with my work,’ says Mattioli. ‘The first kid in the video, Archie, was bliss—all of them were amazing. I hope this is a project I can develop further.'” (via NOWNESS)

WALTER_MARTIN-young_together

♩ Walter Martin – Sing to Me (feat. Karen O) [from We’re All Young Together]

“Is there a sweeter song or video than this right now? The Walkmen’s Walter Martin has made a family-friendly record, and “Sing to Me” — recorded with Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O — will warm your heart.” (via Bob Boilen, NPR Music)

tune yards - nikki nack

Merril Garbus, aka Tune-Yards, is one of the most talented, creative, and unusual musicians making music these days. “Water Fountain” perfectly displays said characteristics…and then some.

Jenny Lewis - The Voyager

I love this song, but it really makes me miss Rilo Kiley (don’t get me wrong though, I love Jenny Lewis’ solo offerings).

broncho - just enough hip to be woman

If this doesn’t hook you right out of the gate, there’s something wrong with you. And probably my favorite album title of the year.

♩ BRONCHO – Class Historian [from Just Hip Enough To Be Woman]

king tuff - black moon spell

If T. Rex was still making music today, it would sound a lot like this.

♩ King Tuff – Beautiful Thing [from Black Moon Spell] (track begins at the 13:56 mark)

alvvays - alvvays

Fuzz pop, chick band…obviously i’m gonna love it.

♩ Alvvays – Archie, Marry Me [from Alvvays]

the orwells - disgraceland

It’s hard not to be jealous of these Chicago rockers and their immense talent. They sound like a 70s rock band, yet they graduated from high school in 2013. And if you’re gonna write a ballad about driving an ex to a suicide attempt, you might as well make it catchy. Very much in the same vain as The Misfits’ “Saturday Night”.

slow club - complete surrender

Between the infectious doo wop influences and tight horn sections, it was love at first listen with this track.

kishi bashi - lighght

It was super difficult for me to select just one track from Kishi Bashi’s incredible sophomore effort Lighght, so to make things easier for me, I went with my 1 year old son’s favorite. This is his jam.

Kishi Bashi – The Ballad of Mr. Steak [from Lighght]

chris staples - american soft

And speaking of my son, Chris Staples sums up fatherhood beautifully. Not gonna lie, i’ve shed more than a few (happy) tears listening to this track.

ages and ages - divisionary-2014

I can’t get enough of this inspirational and upbeat track from Portland’s Ages and Ages. Easily one of the top 10 tracks of 2014. I dare you to a) not sing-a-long with this track and b) not have a more positive outlook on life after listening.

Ages and Ages – Divisionary (Do The Right Thing) [from Divisionary]

babes EP

I’m a sucker for girl group, doo-wop, so it’s no surprise this track’s been on heavy rotation since first listen. One of the best EPs of 2014.

Babes – ATMO [from Babes EP]

tennis - ritual in repeat

Good old fashioned indie-pop fun. Don’t think i’ll ever get tired of this track, especially the chorus.

alt j - this is all yours

I wouldn’t consider myself a big fan of alt-J. I don’t doubt their talented and creative bunch of musicians, there sound just doesn’t really resonate with me. So with all that said, I wasn’t super excited for their sophomore effort. Honestly, I didn’t even know it was in the works, but I was pleasantly surprised with the new LP. There are a handful of good tracks on this record, but “Warm Foothills” (which features Conor Oberst, Lianne La Havas, Sivu, and Marika Hackman) is easily my favorite…even though Pitchfork shat all over it in their review, which probably has more to do with the band not being as “hip” as they were when they seemingly came out of knowhere in 2012.
