I dabble in the black arts from time to time, but I wouldn’t consider myself a legit metal fan. Deafheavan’s 2013 LP, Sunbather, was a surprise favorite of mine and they’ve done it again with this year’s New Bermuda. I can’t really put a finger on it, but there’s something about Deafheaven that speaks to me. I have absolutely no idea what George Clark and company are screaming about, but I love it and the guitar and drum work are irresistible.

I’ve always enjoyed the musical stylings of Dan Deacon, but i wouldn’t have called myself a true fan until he released 2012’s America. Since then, i’ve anxiously awaited a follow up and couldn’t be happier. And if you ever have the chance to see Mr. Deacon live, DO IT. I was lucky enough to catch him at Outside Lands this year and it was magical.

At first listen, I wasn’t immediately hooked on this album. But shortly after few more listens, it became a big time favorite of mine this year. I always appreciate when artists/bands experiment with their signature sound and try new things. With that said, this particular track is classic Belle & Sebastian and couldn’t help but pick it as my favorite.

Rappers like Kanye and Drake seem to get all the press these days, but Kendrick deserves it — easily one of the most impressive Hip Hop artist of 2015. Seriously, the biggest thing Yeezy released all year were his adidas kicks and those things are a bigger waste of money than the Apple Watch. It’s hard enough to follow up a debut album, but to follow up an LP like good kids m.A.D.d. City is even more daunting. In short, Kendrick crushed expectations.

It’s been four (long) years since Rolling Blackouts was released and I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear new music from The Go! Team this year. Definitely a highlight. No other artist/band can pull off what they do with cheerleader chants, samples, guitar riffs, hip hop beats, and so much more.

Father John Misty’s follow up to 2012’s Fear Fun has to be one of the best sophomore releases in quite some time. This is one of those albums I can listen to completely over and over again. The lead-off/title track perfectly sets the tone and hooks me overtime. On another note, I was lucky enough to see Misty live for the second time this year (thanks honey bunny). One of the best live acts these days. Do yourself a favor and catch a show if you can.

Not only was First Day of Camp some of the best TV I enjoyed all year, it was packed full of fun and memorable tunes.

p.s. Oh how I wish “Electro City” was a real broadway musical.

The holiday season is finally upon us and with it comes the 2015 edition of (31) Days of Good!

For those of you unfamiliar with (31) Days of Good, it’s an annual trip down memory lane and look back at some of the year’s best music. There really isn’t a particular order or rank for the songs, I simply pick my favorites and hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Some days will feature a handful of picks, some days might only feature one or two, and like previous years, my good friend and frequent collaborator, Brendan will be offering up his favorite tunes of the year as well. We’ll also be treated to some favorites from the one and only Slippery Duves, so “hold on to your butts.”

I’m positive some tracks will go overlooked and you won’t agree with every pick, but you’ll still get a hefty dosage of fantastic music all month long.

It all kicks off tomorrow, Dec 1st, bright and early. See you then and enjoy the ride.
