[hot off the press] The Postelles//The Postelles

The debut full-length from NYC rockers, The Postelles, is out today (6/7) and it’s definitely worth your attention.

If you’re not familiar with The Postelles, they’re a bunch of NY youngsters with a knack for 1950’s doo-wop and indie garage rock…think Buddy Holly singing lead vocals for The Strokes (neat little fact, album was produced by The Strokes’ rhythm guitarist Albert Hammond Jr).  Last.fm describes the band as “a more modern take on the soundtrack to a 1950s prom with a New York edge thrown in for good measure.”, but Paste Magazine sums it up best — ‘They’re the group that would have been had Marty McFly stuck with his band at the Under the Sea dance and helped develop their sound into a mix of their Motown roots and the rock that would follow, touring the boozy backwaters outside Hill Valley to the delight of any crowd.”

I haven’t heard a single disappointing song from these guys, but White Night is definitely my favorite track.  Check out the video and track below, then do yourself a favor and grab yourself a copy of the album here.

[anticipation] Cults//Cults

May has been a good month for new music.  We’ve already been treated to new releases from the likes of The Antlers, Architecture in Helsinki, Fleet Foxes, and Okkervil River.  Now right around the corner, we have the self-titled debut from Brooklyn duo Cults, which I’ve been eagerly anticipating since I first listened to the Go Outside 7″.

I’ve been listening to the new record quite often the last couple of weeks and I absolutely love it.  My favorite track is definitely the lead off, Abducted, but I also love Never Heal Myself, Most Wanted, Oh My God, and Never Saw the Point.

Cults will be released May 31st, but in the meantime, the good people at NPR Music have made the entire album available to stream here. You can also check out the video for my favorite track, Abducted, below and be sure to join Cults’ mailing list in exchange for a free download of Abducted.

The Antlers ‘Burst Apart’ Today!

The latest from Brooklyn indie rockers, The Antlers, is out today!

Burst Apart is the follow up to one of my absolute favorites of 2009, Hospice, and I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t expecting as much from this record.

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t expecting to be disappointed, but like MGMT before them, The Antlers were faced with the difficult task of following up a critically acclaimed and popular album.  So let’s just say, even though I’ve been (impatiently) anticipating the release of Burst Apart for quite awhile now, I set my expectations a bit lower than I should’ve.  Needless to say, there was no need for me to worry.

I’ve listened to Burst Apart (in it’s entirety) about seven times now and I love it.  Do I love it more than Hospice?  Probably not, but it’s close.  Burst Apart lacks some of the raw emotions and realism that make Hospice such an incredible record, but the band’s “trademark atmospheric tension” remains and Peter Silberman’s “feathery voice is still defiantly pure, floating high above the crystalline sounds of his backing band”.  My favorite track right now is No Widows, but other stand out tracks include I Don’t Want Love, French Exit, Hounds, and Putting the Dog to Sleep.

[hot off the press] Rapdragons//Natural Born Chillers

Baltimore hip hop duo Nick Often and Greg Ward, better known as Rapdragons, have been busy.

Back in 2009, the duo released their debut record, Ten Stories High, to local, regional, and bloggable acclaim. They followed that up with the remix album, Ten Stories Hijacked, in 2010.  Soon after, they released the much-anticipated mixtape album, and one of my favorites, Featuring Baltimore — a collection of hip hop tracks each sampling a different band from baltimore, including Beach House and Future Islands.

Now when I woke up this morning, I was pleasantly surprised and excited to see an email from Rapdragons waiting in my inbox announcing their latest mixtape EP, Natural Born Chillers.  I really haven’t had a chance to give the EP a proper listen, but i’m sure it won’t disappoint.  Like Featuring Baltimore, the new EP is another collection of hip hop meets indie rock…or as I like to call it, Indie Hop.  And like previous releases, Natural Born Chillers is available for free download here!

Like I said before, I haven’t given the new EP a proper listen, but so far I’m really digging the title track:

If you’re a frequent visitor/listener of the Hype Machine, you’ve more than likely listened to a RAC remix.

RAC (aka Remix Artist Collective) has worked with a boat load of well-known and influential artists/bands, such as The Shins, Bloc Party, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as well as plenty of unsigned indie bands in their early careers.  About three years ago, RAC released the remix compilation RAC VOL 1.  It premiered on Stereogum.com and was an instant hit.  Lucky for us, RAC  just released the much anticipated follow-up, RAC VOL 2, and again it’s available for free!  Below are two of favorite RAC remixes right now, but be sure to follow the links below and listen to more…you won’t be disappointed.
