[on the road] Hello Electric

Portland’s trio Hello Electric promises a series of dynamic shows on their tour of the West Coast, beginning October 15th, which includes stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Seattle, and their hometown of Portland (check the dates below).

Kirk Ohnstad, Henry Gibson and Zachary Bendt make minimal electronic rock with a dash of power shine. Their live shows are centered on depth, intensity and simplicity. Each member has a distinctive role, although they all have the same roots: the drum set. Rhythm is essential to Hello Electric. Their live show combines real drums with electronic beats and pushes the low end with dark keys and thick synths. Unity takes shape with gritty guitar leads flourishing the heavy bass-driven backbone.

“I am inspired by minimalism, open sounds and emptiness. It’s a difficult place to be because of the amount of patience involved…” explains Onhstad.

Vancouver, Canada’s Said the Whale made their first foray into the U.S. last March, touring on their sophomore album Islands Disappear, traveling from Seattle to Austin’s SXSW and back up the West Coast. Now as they ready to release a new EP in November, the quintet prepares to launch another tour of the United States, touching down in some familiar spots along the West Coast as well as a spattering of dates in unfamiliar territory around the rest of the U.S.. They’ll be joined by Kelowna, BC’s atmospheric progressive pop band We Are the City, who will release in the U.S. their debut EP, High School, plus brand new 7″ single, “Mourning Song/Morning Song” on October 4. If you live in LA and you’re at least 21 years old, go check out Big Black Delta at The Satellite tonight (9/19, along with War Widow, Kristeen Young, & The M.I.D.S).  The show’s free, so no excuses.  Be there.

Canadian songstress, Feist, is hitting the road this Fall and Winter in support of her latest release.  She’ll be kickin’ the tour off with the some shows in Canada and Europe, eventually making her way to the US, including a stop at the Wiltern on November 12th.

Feist’s latest, Metals, is set to be released Oct. 4th, via Polydor Records (pre-order).

[CMJ 2011] First Round of Artists Announced

CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival just recently announced the first round of artists scheduled to play this year.  The initial lineup is fantastic and full of personal favorites—Portugal. The Man, Givers, Zola Jesus, Talib Kweli, Dum Dum Girls, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Braids… just to name a few.

If you’re not familiar with CMJ, take my word for it, DON’T MISS THIS FESTIVAL.  I personally can’t think of a finer music festival in the US.  Not only is it your chance to catch an insane amount of live music, full of up-and-coming buzz bands that you get to enjoy before they lay claim to a swath of Grammys, but it just happens to also take place in one the world’s greatest cities.

I told myself last year I wasn’t going to miss 2011…let’s just say I’m already saving up for next year.  But don’t miss out on my account.  You can purchase badges here, peep the plethora of previously-announced industry-stacked panels here, and keep checking back here for more CMJ 2011 news.  CMJ is set for Oct. 18 – 22 in NYC, but in the meantime, familiarize yourself with the initial lineup below and enjoy some tunes along the way.
