[on the road] Light FM

LA’s own Light FM will be bringing their energetic synth-rock to the Silverlake Lounge for a December residency starting on Monday, December 15th.  These are free shows, so no excuses!

This indie-rock quartet recently wrapped a tour opening for Smashing Pumpkins in promotion of their latest full-length album Buzz Kill City, which was released this past October through Moonboot Records. In addition, the group performed at KROQ’s Lobsterfest 2011 and headlined shows at Subterranean in Chicago, Hollywood’s The Roxy Theater and San Francisco’s Bottom of the Hill.

Front-man Josiah Mazzaschi relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles several years ago, founding his own studio The Cave and working as a studio engineer and producer with artists such as Built to Spill, William Reid (Jesus and Mary Chain), Rilo Kiley, and Money Mark. Upon releasing their breakthrough album Let There Be Light FM, the group has also performed with The National, Ra Ra Riot, Earlimart, Billy Corgan, and Grandaddy. Now they’re back in their hometown of Los Angeles to play a Monday-night residency and we hope you’ll come out and join us at the Silverlake Lounge for a string of impressive (free) shows. [recap] M83 – The Music Box – 11/9/11

I’ve been a big fan of M83 since I first heard “We Own The Sky” in the snowboard flick, That’s It, That’s All.  Since then, Anthony Gonzalez and company have become one of my favorite musical acts and i’ve gobbled up everything they’ve released (at least i think i have).

Last night, the wifey and I were lucky enough to see them play a super sold-out show (tickets were going for $150+ on stubhub) at The Music Box in Hollywood.  This was my first time seeing the group live, and I honestly didn’t know what to expect.  I absolutely LOVE M83, but I’m always a bit nervous that I’ll be let down when I see one of favorites live for the first time.  Needless to say, the show was everything I expected — ambitious, visually stunning, the perfect amount of loud, and quite simply…epic.

I was pleasantly surprised with the opening act, Active Child.  Take a minute and give them a listen, you won’t be disappointed…unless of course you hate the harp.

White Sea’s powerhouse vocalist/keyboardist Morgan Kibby was a force to be reckoned with (seriously, she was amazing and her stage presence captivated me all night).

The perfect transition from “My Tears Becoming a Sea” to “Teen Angst” and the vocals on “Wait” gave me chills.

“Midnight City” is even better live and the saxophone player, who seemingly appeared on stage out of nowhere, tore up his solo.

Arcade Fire & Neil Young performed “Helpless” at the 25th annual Bridge School Benefit concert.  If you’re not familiar, “The Bridge School Benefit is an annual non-profit charity concert held in Mountain View, California, every October at the Shoreline Amphitheatre.  The concerts are all organized by musician Neil Young and his wife, Pegi.

Proceeds benefit the Bridge School, which assists children with severe physical impairments and complex communication needs.  One of the thrusts of the program is the use of advanced augmentative and alternative communication and assistive technology.

The first concert was in October 1986, and, with the exception of 1987, the concert has been held every year since. It is known for having a relatively high-profile lineup and strong performances, primarily due to Neil Young’s extensive connections within the music industry.  Young also performs every year.  As a practice, but not a rule, the performers use acoustic instruments.” [source: wikipedia]

[on the road] Phantogram

NY trip-hop duo Phantogram are on the road this month, and next, in support of their upcoming mini-album, Nightlife.  I love love love Phantogram and can’t wait for Nightlife, which is set to be released 11/1.  If you haven’t already heard the new track “Don’t Move”(grab it below), you better have a darn good excuse.

The duo will be playing shows all over the US and along the way be joined by Exitmusic and Reptar (both great acts, check dates below for specifics).  If you have the chance to catch one of the shows, do it.  I’ve heard nothing but great things about their live sets.
