As I prep #31days2016, I find myself exploring the tunes from past (31) Days of Good. It seems counter productive when i’m writing about the best new music of the year, but listening to old favorites seems to motivate me more. A few weeks ago, Brendan and I revisited the early blogspot days of Concrete Opinionsand 35mmBeats on Revolutions Per Minute and had a blast. So, as we approach the “best of season”, i thought it would be nice to share my old (31) Days of Good playlists.
A leader in the UK Grime scene for sometime now..Skepta is on the verge of completely blowing up with major cosigns from the likes of Drake. Skepta is a fully formed MC, label head, and producer who seems poised to carve out his name in the world of hip hop.
It’s crazy to see an artist who has continually been atop the pop charts fooling the mass music listening audience into loving straight up f@$k music. The Weeknd is the modern master of baby making music. This is another vibed out track from the man who redefined today’s R&B landscape; examining fame, drugs, and the music industry as a whole.
♩ The Weeknd – Tell Your Friends [from Beauty Behind The Madness]
Brendan’s favorite LPs of 2015. When you’re done here, be sure to check out Billy’s favorite LPs and EPs. Need more Brendan? Find more here.
11 – D’Angelo // Black Messiah
(technically a 2014 release, but it might as well be a 2015 release and we never properly acknowledged this fine piece of music last year)
If I was a professional athlete this would be my hype music. The aggression of this song sounds like Yeezus meets grime…I’m very curious to see what SWISH will sound like.
♩ Kanye West ft. Theophilus London, Allan Kingdom & Paul McCartney – All Day [single]
I cannot get enough of this song…aside from Adele’s “Hello”, this has to be the most covered/talked about song of the year…this version is so good that I like it much better than the original.
One of the only rappers today still doing 90s style gansta rap, and it doesn’t sound dated from Mr. Gibbs. This guy can rap, and he could have gone the major label route but chose to keep things small and do things his way…which I love
♩ Freddie Gibbs – 10 Times (ft. Gucci Mane & E-40) [from Shadow of a Doubt]
